“For I delight in the law of God after the inward man: But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members (Rom. 7:22-23).” Clearly, the enemy is at work. He comes for no other purpose but to steal, kill and to destroy (John 10:10). He comes to do battle with us… in the mind, to confuse us, to trap and trip us up, and to then have us believe we were never saved, never changed, never redeemed. Indeed, he’d have us believe that it would be impossible to live a Godly life–that we are slaves to sin.
The inward man, my redeemed, spirit man wants to obey God, to walk according to His Word. “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new (II Cor. 5:17).” Yet the old man keeps trying to rear his ugly head. We must choose (daily) to walk in the newness of life. To do so, we must be alert, sober, vigilant to avoid temptation… for our enemy walks about as a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour (I Pet. 5:8). We are not ignorant of his devices (II Cor. 2:11); instead, we are instructed to put on the whole armor of God so that we are able to stand against the tricks of the devil (Eph. 6:11). We must continually renew our mind in the Word of God and to think on things are true, honest, just, pure, lovely and of a good report (Phil. 4:8). Someone said recently (on the radio) and I agree… Our prayer should be, where there is opportunity, let there be no desire; and where there is desire, let there be no opportunity to do wrong.
