Worship… The catechism says that the chief end of man is to glorify God and to fully enjoy him forever. If we fail to do this, we fail to fulfill our purpose. Although I’m not Catholic, it has a universal appeal–that ALL people EVERYWHERE are called to glorify God. I had the privilege of presenting this topic (Operation Worship: The Surgical Removal of Every Hindrance to Our Worship) on yesterday afternoon. While I won’t repeat or summarize it here, I will simply explain the concept.
Jesus said, “And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all [men] unto me (John 12:32).” When we give true worship, He is lifted up! The adversary, Satan, doesn’t mind if we fake the praise but he certainly will not allow us to waltz or quick step our way into the presence of God and truly worship Him. He fights us constantly in this area. Superficial praise is not really a threat to him. Some of us know just when to jerk, lift our hands and do a cute dance. If our heart really isn’t in it, Satan just keeps us under surveillance. He knows when there’s a shift in the atmosphere. Having once been the angel appointed over praise & worship, he knows worship. It is familiar territory to him. He is, perhaps, more familiar than we are with worship. He comes to church faithfully–not because he loves the Lord, but rather to make sure we don’t enter into true worship. We need to go under the spiritual knife. We must allow the Holy Spirit to make the incision and cut away the infected parts and pieces of our lives that hinder our worship. “Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: And see if [there be any] wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting (Ps. 139:23-234).” We must allow God, the Master Surgeon, to take away the stony heart and give us a heart of flesh (Ezekiel 11:19).
