We can only do touch-up work for so long. At some point, we need a thorough and extreme makeover. I love this show–Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. Actually, I also like its companion show… Weight Loss Edition as well. Watching the crew work from start to finish is amazing. If they were just doing ‘patch-work’ on either show, it wouldn’t be quite as exciting– although any positive change is welcome; but to see the extreme, radical transformation of the home and person is so encouraging that I have to stay with it until the end, even though it’s well past my bedtime. Spiritually speaking, we do quick patch work, mud and tape a few areas, and paint over it. We try to hang on while bandaging and covering up areas that truly need to be (spiritually) surgically removed. We snip and clip some areas that need to be totally demolished and rebuilt. Sometimes, we just need a good ol’ implosion and a fresh start. We need the regenerating work of the Holy Spirit. If we have not experienced a spiritual birth, we still need the Holy Spirit–we cannot come (to Christ) except the Holy Spirit draws us (I Cor. 12:3).”
“And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins, in which you once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience, among whom also we all once conducted ourselves in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, just as the others. But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved). (Ephesians 2:1-5)”
As Spirit-filled believers, we must continually be filled. Just as we fill our gas tanks, we must stay filled with the Holy Spirit. Many who claim to be filled with the Holy Ghost are just as dry and un-involved in spiritual disciplines and have little interest in spiritual concerns–only in matters of the flesh. Many are running on fumes at best… at this point. But… there’s hope… dry bones CAN live again! Make us over, God! Of course, to say this means we must submit to the makeover. We tend to jump off that (Potter’s) wheel when it gets a little uncomfortable. If we hang in there, and stay on the wheel, we’re guaranteed to appreciate the results! He does all things well.
