“For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears (II Timothy 4:3);”
It’s here–an entire community of “the church visible” who are disenchanted with the pure, unadulterated Word of God! This unfortunate group runs from church to church to get a word on prosperity and blessing; however, in the unlikely event that the word on holy living is preached, they’re ready to move on to the next congregation. No sound doctrine for them, thanks. They don’t stay anywhere long enough to become rooted and grounded in the Word of God–but simply pull up stakes & move two churches to the right as if playing a game of musical chairs or churches! This group cannot be pastored, can’t be taught, and will not grow in Christ because they refuse to listen or be corrected about their ungodly habits. They consider themselves to be living by grace. “What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein? (Romans 6:1-2).”
This group simply finds teachers who condone what they are doing. The word “heap” is used, which would indicate there are no lack of teachers that will tell them just what they want to hear–who will scratch and soothe their itching ears. After all, if the offering is large enough, many teachers will simply forego the “sin” topic. If the tithe is significant, this same pile of teachers will simply wink at sin on the one hand, or turn a blind eye on the other.
I’ve never seen so many people who pack up and go before letting the dust settle. They’re in and then two Sundays later, they’re out. They won’t tolerate the pure Word of God. But we’re admonished to desire the sincere milk of the Word that we may grow thereby (I Peter 2:2). If you’re not desiring more of God and His Word, if you can’t tolerate the pure Word on holy living, your ears should be itching… because I’m talking about you.
